Study 3: God chooses Israel

What do you remember from reading Genesis 4 and 11? How do we see the spread of sin in these passages?

Read Genesis 11:27 – 12:5a
words
• contempt – a manner that is generally disrespectful
• covet – A strong desire for something that does not belong to you

1. Who are Abram’s relatives?

2. God makes a covenant (formal agreement/contract) with Abram. What are the promises God makes under these three headings?
a) People

b) Land

c) Blessing

The remainder of Genesis traces the four generations from Abram (who is later known as Abraham) through the sons of Jacob, who were the patriarchal originators of the 12 tribes of Israel. When Abraham was 100 years old and his wife Sarah was 90, a son, Isaac, was born to them. Although Isaac’s wife Rebekah was unable to have children for a time, they eventually had twins, Esau and Jacob. Although Esau is the older twin, Jacob is the one who receives the father’s blessing and is later named Israel (Israel means he struggles with God) by God. Israel’s family end up in Egypt as his son Joseph is appointed second in command through an extraordinary story. However, his descendants eventually become slaves in Egypt later, but God sets them free from slavery through the leadership of a man named Moses.

Read Exodus 19:1-9
3. What did God do for the Israelites? (v.4)

4. What does God promise to do in the future? (vv. 5-6)

5. How do these promises relate to the ones He made to Abram in Genesis 12?

6. What do the people promise to God? (v. 8)

God tells the Israelites that they are His special people who are to show the rest of the world what it is like to live in relationship to the Redeemer Creator God. In order to do this, God gives the people a set of rules to live by. In all, there are 613 rules that God gives and these are found in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The 10 commandments are a summary of the rules that God gave the people to live by.

Read Exodus 20:1-21
7. How do these rules show how people are to relate to
a) God?

b) Each other?

8. Are these commandments still relevant today?

Please read Deuteronomy 17:14-20, Joshua 24:1-28 before the next study

Genesis 11
27 This is the account of Terah's family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.28 But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living.29 Meanwhile, Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah. (Milcah and her sister Iscah were daughters of Nahor's brother Haran.)30 But Sarai was unable to become pregnant and had no children.
31 One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram's wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran's child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there.32 Terah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran.

Genesis 12
1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land that I will show you.2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you."
4 So Abram departed as the LORD had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.5 He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan.

Genesis 19
1Exactly two months after the Israelites left Egypt, they arrived in the wilderness of Sinai.2 After breaking camp at Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and set up camp there at the base of Mount Sinai.
3 Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel:4 `You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me.6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.' This is the message you must give to the people of Israel."
7 So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the LORD had commanded him.8 And all the people responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has commanded." So Moses brought the people's answer back to the LORD.
9 Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will come to you in a thick cloud, Moses, so the people themselves can hear me when I speak with you. Then they will always trust you."

Exodus 20
1 Then God gave the people all these instructions.
2 "I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
3 "You must not have any other god but me.
4 "You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
7 "You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
8 "Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work,10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
12 "Honour your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13 "You must not murder.
14 "You must not commit adultery.
15 "You must not steal.
16 "You must not testify falsely against your neighbour.
17 "You must not covet your neighbour's house. You must not covet your neighbour's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbour."

18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram's horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
19 And they said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen. But don't let God speak directly to us, or we will die!"
20 "Don't be afraid," Moses answered them, "for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!"
21 As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.
